Leeds United Under-21s built on their impressive draw with Chelsea last time out with a fantastic comeback victory over Derby County away from home in the Premier League 2.
After falling a goal behind in Matlock despite dominating the ball, the Whites picked up the three points courtesy of Harry Gray’s second-half brace.
In the pouring rain, United were well worth the victory according to boss Scott Gardner, who was impressed with the spirit his side had shown.
“There were some really difficult conditions and the pitch was a challenge but in fairness, particularly in the first half, I thought we had enough chances to be well in front,” he explained after the full-time whistle.
“We found ourselves a goal down but showed good character and didn’t panic. I thought we deserved the win in the end.
“I think we have belief in how we play and how we work. I thought we were calm and we spoke at half time that we would create chances, and we did. Overall, we were deserving of the victory.”
Gray’s double after the break ultimately proved to be the difference at the Proctor Cars Stadium, with Gardner happy at the progress the striker is making on his return from injury.
“Harry is still finding his way back and he has a lot to do but I am pleased he got his goals. He should have had a couple more!
“We now have a couple of days to prepare for Norwich and be ready to go again.”
