Scott Gardner will take his Under-18s side to Burnley on Saturday lunchtime, as they return to league action following the international break.
A large proportion of his young side stepped up to Under-23 level during the week in the Premier League Cup, and were impressive despite defeat against an experienced Wigan side.
Gardner said: “We had a number of players away so it was a fantastic opportunity for them to be with their national sides, and that created an opportunity for others to play.
“That shows the pathway at this football club and the confidence we have in our players to have stepped up to Under-23s level.
“Not only did I think they competed, they thrived in a lot of areas against a strong Wigan team. The lads did as we expected, we wouldn’t have put them into that environment if we didn’t back their ability.
“They showed what they have been doing at Under-18 level and against more senior professionals, they didn’t look out of place.”
The Clarets sit in third place in the table after three matches, in what is already proving to be tight and well contested league table. Gardner stated that he wants to see his side continue to implement their style, ahead of the match.
“The message will be the same as what we have been saying to the players for the last couple of games,” he explained.
“Performance wise, we have been pleased with what the lads have done, but in the last two matches we’ve been disappointed with the results.
“It highlights the importance at both ends of the pitch and Saturday is an opportunity to put that right.
“We know what Burnley will be looking to do, and likewise they will know what we will be planning. We expect another tough test against them.”
