Leeds United Under-21s twice fought from behind to earn a deserved Premier League 2 point on home soil against Brighton & Hove Albion Under-21s.
Rhys Chadwick and Harvey Vincent were on target for the Whites at the LNER Community Stadium, leaving boss Scott Gardner pleased with his team’s display.
“We were pretty dominant in every aspect of the game,” he explained after the full-time whistle. “Just a shame we didn’t get the win.
“I was really pleased for them that they didn’t lose the game because they didn’t deserve to lose it based on how they played.
“We talked about it there, there was never a feeling, even with 10 men, where I didn’t think we would get back in the game.
“I thought we had complete control, really. It is just a shame that the two goals we conceded from distance, both off our own errors to start with.
“But, yes, really, really pleased for them that they didn’t lose. I think that it is important that we maintain our form here, which we haven’t lost yet this season.”
Trio Harry Gray, Sam Chambers and goalscorer Chadwick also gained valuable match sharpness in York, starting the encounter against the Seagulls.
“Yes, really pleased for all of them,” the boss added. “It is really important that they get the minutes. Sam has obviously been out for a while.
“I think he did extremely well to get to the 70 minutes that he did. And I am pleased that the other lads contributed around him like they do.”
It was also a second full 90 minutes in two days for goalkeeper Rory Mahady, who starred for Scunthorpe United on loan in their FA Cup tie against Blackpool on Saturday, something Gardner believes is crucial for the Scotland youth international’s development.
“Massive. Any senior football that the lads can get, we are willing and the feedback was good for him. So good luck to him again on Tuesday when he goes back.”
