Leeds United secured an important victory at home to Queens Park Rangers in the Sky Bet Championship, to send Daniel Farke’s side into the international break with three points, claiming a ninth clean sheet of the season along the way.
Prior to kick-off, the teams emerged from the tunnel with wreaths to lay and then observed a moment of silence, alongside the playing of The Last Post. The game had been dedicated as the club’s Remembrance Day and was observed immaculately by all inside Elland Road.
Occupying a place in the relegation places and having won just once in the league so far this season, Marti Cifuentes saw his side press high and try to take the game to the Whites early on, in search of points.
The only chance of note in the opening 10 minutes was created by Brenden Aaronson, who turned on the edge of the box and was fouled. He took the free-kick himself, but struck it into the wall.
Our number 11 would go even closer moments later though. Again fashioning a chance himself on the edge of the box, his powerful shot could only be blocked by the crossbar this time!
It wouldn’t take long though for the scoring to be opened after a clever run from Joe Rothwell, who decided he would be the creator this time.
His chipped ball into the box from the wing caused chaos, with Sam Byram, Willy Gnonto and Mateo Joseph all having efforts, but eventually Jayden Bogle was perfectly position to find the back of the net with his left-foot!
Well on top in the game, Bogle went close again after weaving his way through the visiting defence. His effort was blocked and fell to Ao Tanaka on the edge, he then shot, before another QPR body on the line denied a second!
The away side had a good chance of their own to level the scores though, with their first real effort on goal. Lucas Andersen whipped a free-kick into the middle and making the first contact, Jimmy Dunne flicked his header narrowly past the post.
Approaching half-time, Farke’s side did find the net again, but were denied a second by the linesman’s flag. Aaronson played the ball through to Byram who squared for Solomon to slot home, but the full-back was adjudged to have been offside prior to his pass.
That was to be the final action before the break and that allowed the home side to go in with a half-time advantage, following Bogle’s opener midway through the half.
HALF TIME: Leeds United 1-0 Queens Park Rangers
Neither side had made a change at the interval and that allowed the teams to head back out, to contest a game which was still in the balance.
A first opening of the second period was created by Gnonto. He picked up the ball near his own box, raced to the opposition box and played in Solomon, but the winger had his left-footed effort saved by Paul Nardi in the QPR net.
Like in the first half, the R’s had a big chance to level. Steve Cook had found himself out wide, he drilled a low ball into the Leeds area which found Sam Field who struck first time, but curled just over the bar.
With around 20 minutes left to play, Farke went to his bench. He made a double switch, bringing on Joel Piroe and Dan James, for Solomon and Joseph.
High on confidence after scoring the opening goal, Bogle came close once again. After tricking his way into the box from the right, Aaronson created the chance for his full-back, who struck low at goal and forced Nardi into a good save.
Leeds were given a warning as the game edged towards its conclusion. With five minutes remaining QPR broke forward and found Zan Celar in space, he curled just over the bar, which was a let-off.
Six minutes of stoppage was shown by the fourth official as the clicked ticked over 90 minutes and more chances did come, as Piroe and Bogle had further efforts, as well as Josuha Guilavogui who came off the bench for the final few minutes.
With one minute of added time left, the Whites did wrap up the three points, through Piroe! He found a way into the box and with work to do, finished brilliantly with the outside of his left-foot to confirm a big three points.
