June is LGBT+Pride month. It’s a time when some members of the community, their friends, families and allies celebrate being able to live their true lives, join parades around the country and have fun. For many people in society though, it’s still not possible to be visible and proud - for fear of violence and discrimination.
In men’s football it’s still extremely rare for players to feel sufficiently safe and supported to come out and live their true lives. The visibility of Luke Ayling, Jermaine Beckford and Noel Whelan joining Marching Out Together at Leeds Pride last year was a wonderful and powerful statement that some people in the game want to see change and recognise the need for it.
We are looking forward to working with Leeds United, and the new owners from 49ers Enterprises again at Leeds Pride this year as the club continues to strive to help make everyone welcome when supporting our great club.
As we look ahead to a new season, please remember that as fans you can make a difference by being thoughtful in the language you use in the ground, and by challenging hatred and abuse when you hear it.
Enjoy Pride month everyone. And be proud to be a fan of a club that continues to supports the LGBT+ community.
