FAWNL Cup action for the Whites.

STOCKTON TOWN FC

Leeds United Women return to FA Women’s National League Cup action on Sunday afternoon, when they travel north to face Middlesbrough FC Women.

Sunday’s clash will come in the ‘First Round Proper’ of the competition, after both teams began their journey in the ‘Determining Round’ last month.

Simon Wood’s side were given a tough first outing away from home, coming up against locals rivals Halifax Women FC, which they overcame with an impressive victory.

In a battling encounter throughout, Leeds kept in control of the match and struck twice in the final 10 minutes to progress. The goals came from experienced midfielder Sarah Danby, before Drew Greene sealed the win in the final moments.

Following that success, the Whites were given a ‘bye’ in the next round, progressing the match-up with Boro this weekend.

Our upcoming opponents also had a tough fixture on paper to begin with, against their local rivals Durham Cestria, which again, they overcame comfortably.

A convincing 4-1 success on home turf saw both Faye Dale and Ellen Turnbull score a brace each.

The next round matched the Reds up against Stourbridge away from home, where another emphatic 4-1 win followed. The goals this time came from Jessica Matt, Abby Towers and a double from Lauren Robson.

The two teams have met once this season in the league, which saw Middlesbrough claim the three points.

A hard-fought and entertaining game at the Bannister Prentice Stadium ended with the visitors securing a 2-3 victory, after Matt netted an 89th minute winner.
