Preview: Leeds United Women vs Barnsley FC

Whites back on FAWNL duties.

Bannister Prentice Stadium

Leeds United Women make a much-anticipated return to league action, as they host local rivals Barnsley in this weekend’s Yorkshire derby.

Simon Wood’s side have had a small break from the FA WNL Division One North due to cup commitments and other fixture changes, and will now be looking to continue their impressive form from the previous matches.

Back-to-back hard-fought victories over Durham Cestria and Doncaster Rovers Belles came at the Bannister Prentice Stadium for the Whites, before they travelled to Cheshire to face Cheadle Town last time out.

A brace from the in-form Kath Smith, taking the midfielder’s tally for the season to nine goals in 10 appearances, got United off to the perfect start, before Amy Woodruff’s composed finish in the second half sealed an important three points for the team.

Those results leave Leeds fourth in the standings, though should they win their game in hand, United will climb to second, just one point adrift of early pace setters Middlesbrough.

Barnsley, meanwhile, have struggled for consistency since joining the division at the start of the campaign, winning just one of their opening seven fixtures and losing on three occasions.

Last time out, the Tykes fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Chorley, after exiting the FA Cup the previous weekend.

Action from Garforth gets underway at 2pm.
