Preview: Leeds United vs Sunderland

Whites back in midweek action.

Elland Road night

Leeds United can look forward to another Premier League night under the Elland Road lights as they welcome Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland to West Yorkshire.

Only three days on from a positive showing against Pep Guardiola’s six-time champions, Daniel Farke’s side will be seeking to build on the positive run of results amassed since November.

Last time out, the Whites were narrowly beaten by Manchester City despite an encouraging display and, before that, a point away at Aston Villa. Anton Stach’s stunning freekick was cancelled out late on by Tammy Abraham, securing a point away from home for Leeds.

United’s last win on home turf came against Nottingham Forest in a crucial clash in the battle for Premier League survival. Jayden Bogle and Noah Okafor converted in the first half, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin secured his 10th goal of the season to confirm a significant three points at a fired-up Elland Road.

Sunderland are coming into the clash off the back of an away point at the Vitality Stadium. The Black Cats led for a majority of the match through Eliezer Mayenda’s 18th-minute strike but were forced to settle for a point as Bournemouth’s Evanilson drew level with half-an-hour to go.

Over the decades, there have been many memorable, often fiery encounters between the Whites and the Black Cats dating back to the clubs’ first meeting in 1924.

United and Sunderland have encountered each other 94 times with Leeds winning 40 and drawing 21 of those matches.

Memorably in recent times, Daniel Farke’s side emerged victorious late on against Tuesday’s visitors with a 2-1 comeback courtesy of brace from Pascal Struijk, sending Elland Road into pandemonium in the title race.

Action from Elland Road gets underway at 7.30pm and you can follow it all across leedsunited.com, as well as on LUTV.

The view from inside the camp:

Speaking exclusively to Premier League Productions, Calvert-Lewin said: “Tough like every Premier League game. There are no easy ones these days.

“We have to take confidence from our current form and the game being played at Elland Road and back ourselves to go there and put on a good performance and win the game.”
