Leeds United Women are back in action on Wednesday evening, as they take on Barnsley Women’s FC in a Yorkshire derby.

Both teams come into the match looking for an important three points, as they continue their respective fights at opposite ends of the league table.

Leeds are attempting to close the gap to both Liverpool Feds and Newcastle United Women, who are the current top two in the league standings. The Reds however are aiming to put distance between themselves and the teams below them, as they sit just a point above the relegation zone.

Coming into the game, Barnsley have lost their last two outings, both of which were on home turf. Beginning the year of 2022, the Reds won away at Norton & Stockton, but then lost to Newcastle before suffering the same 3-0 loss the following weekend against Durham Cestria.

The Whites had to fight from behind in their last match. A 1-1 draw at home to Chorley on Sunday was the first time Dan O’Hearne and his side had been in league action since October. Kathryn Smith scored a superb equaliser before the Whites were denied all three points, after the visiting ‘keeper saved a second half penalty.

The last time the two teams met was in September. Four superb goals from Laura Bartup stole the headlines that day, in a result that saw Leeds comfortably take the points in a 5-0 win. You can watch the highlights from that game, below!

Leeds can’t move higher up positions wise in the league with a victory on Wednesday night, but three points could close the gap. The Reds do have a chance of moving up the ladder though, as a win could see them go above both FC United of Manchester and Stockport County, depending on goal difference and results elsewhere.
