Played For Both: Leeds United & Burnley

Leeds United return to Elland Road on Saturday as Daniel Farke’s men take on Burnley in the Sky Bet Championship.

Ahead of the game, we have taken a look at the players who have represented both clubs and selected a Starting XI from those who have worn both shirts.

GOALKEEPER:

Paul Robinson

The Leeds United FA Youth Cup winner began his senior footballing career with the Whites. Over the course of six seasons, Robinson made 119 appearances and even scored one goal, a last minute equaliser against Swindon Town in the League Cup, during his time in Yorkshire. After a spells with Tottenham and Blackburn, he made the move to Burnley in 2015 where he went on to play three games before retiring from the game in 2017.

DEFENDER: Charlie Taylor

Taylor came through the Leeds United academy and after four loan spells between 2012 and 2014, he become a first team regular from the start of the 2014/15 campaign until his departure in 2017. The full-back racked up 104 appearances and scored three goals. Burnley secured his signature in July 2017 and remained with the Clarets until the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. Taylor played in both the Europa League, Premier League and Championship with the club and made 220 appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

DEFENDER:

Connor Roberts

The Wales international signed for Burnley from Swansea City ahead of the 2021/22 campaign and despite being relegated in his first season, bounced straight back up to the Premier League the following year. So far, Roberts has 93 Burnley appearances and six goals to his name. Leeds signed the right-back on loan in January 2024 and helped the club reach the Championship play-off final. Overall, he netted once and featured 15 times for the Whites.

DEFENDER: Peter Haddock

Haddock made the move to Burnley on loan from Newcastle in 1986 where he played just seven times before departing his parent club for good the same year. Haddock signed for Leeds from Newcastle and during the early days of his career, he suffered a number of injuries but later went on to become an integral part of the 1989/90 promotion side under Howard Wilkinson. He played 146 games and scored one goal for Leeds United.

DEFENDER:

Peter Hampton

The defender made his professional debut with Leeds at the end of the 1972/73 season but struggled to get back into the side due to the form of Terry Cooper, Trevor Cherry and Frank Gray. He spent the next few seasons making sporadic appearances until the 1976/77 campaign where he featured 36 times in one season for the club. However, he couldn’t retain his place and left the club following the conclusion of the 1979/80 season after 83 appearances and three goals. After a spell with Stoke City, Hampton moved to Burnley where he spent the next three seasons of his career in both the Third and Fourth Division. He played 134 times and scored twice during his time with the Clarets.

MIDFIELDER:

Kevin Hird

Burnley fan Hird signed for Leeds from Blackburn Rovers in 1979 for a club record fee of £357,000. He played at both right back and in midfield during his Leeds days and he racked up exactly 200 appearances and 21 goals in the process before leaving in 1984. Hird directly joined Burnley from Leeds and in two seasons he managed to rack up 23 goals in 83 appearances for his boyhood club.

MIDFIELDER:

Mark Ford

Ford came through the LUFC academy and was part of the Leeds side that won the FA Youth Cup in 1993. He made a total of 42 appearances over the course of three seasons and scored one goal for the Whites. He couldn’t fully cement his place in the Leeds team and joined Burnley in 1997. Ford had a successful first season at Turf Moor but broke his ankle on the opening day of the following season and struggled to regain his place in the first team after three months out. Overall, he scored one goal in 48 games for the Clarets and departed in 1999.

MIDFIELDER:

Aaron Lennon

Born in Leeds, Lennon became the youngest ever player to play in the Premier League when he came on as a substitute against Tottenham at the age of 16 years and 129 days. The winger would spend two seasons with his boyhood club playing in both the Premier League and Championship - racking up 43 appearances and scoring one goal in the process. He then spent the majority of his career with Everton and spells with Everton and Kayserispor would soon follow. Lennon also had two spells with Burnley, the first coming in 2018 where he played 55 times between 2018 and 2020 and again during the 2021/22 campaign. In total he played on 87 occasions and scored two goals.

FORWARD:

Jaidon Anthony

Anthony joined Leeds United on loan from Bournemouth ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and racked up a total of 38 appearances and netted twice during his time with the club. After returning to his parent club in the summer, the winger was sent out on loan again. This time, to fellow Championship side Burnley where he currently has one appearance to his name.

FORWARD:

Robbie Blake

In 2002, Blake signed for Burnley had established himself as a regular with the Clarets after making 138 appearances and scoring 51 goals until his departure in 2005. After only a few months with Birmingham City, Blake signed for Leeds United in the summer of 2005 and would go on to score 20 goals in 87 games in all competitions during his time in Yorkshire. After two seasons with the Whites, he re-signed for Burnley ahead of the 2007/08 campaign. He went on to help the Clarets gain promotion to the Premier League in 2009 and left the club in 2010 after a total of 282 games and 72 goals over two spells with the Lancashire side.

FORWARD:

Roger Eli

Eli came through the academy at Leeds and made just the two appearances for the club back in 1984 but later became a Burnley cult hero during the Clarets’ time in the Fourth Division. During the 1990/91 season, Eli scored 10 goals as Burnley reached the play-offs but missed out on promotion. However, the following season he netted 17 goals as Burnley won the Fourth Division title. He sustained an injury after promotion and as a result he failed to make another appearance for the club, he was released in 1994.
