Premier League Cup action for the Whites.

Mark Jackson will take a young Under-23s side to York City’s LNER Community Stadium on Monday evening, to face Mansfield Town in the Premier League Cup (19:00).

Due to being played in an international break, a number of the usual Under-23s squad are away with their respective international teams. Head coach, Jackson has been clear that it gives a real opportunity for the younger players within the squad and within the Under-18s to step up and make an impact.

Monday night’s clash will be the first between the two teams at this stage, with second match scheduled for February 2022.

The Whites have narrowly lost both games in Group E of the competition so far, with two young squads going down to 2-1 defeats against both Wigan and Sunderland.

The Stags however have won one and lost one from their opening two. They beat Sunderland comfortably 3-0 on home turf, before going away to Wigan and losing by the same scoreline. The Latics face the Black Cats this coming Wednesday, in a 1pm kick-off.

The cup competition as a whole is split into eight groups of four teams, where each team within the group will play one another home and away. From there, the top two teams will progress into the knockout stages of the competition which are all one-off knockout ties, with extra-time and penalties if needed.

The current holders of the Premier League Cup are Everton, who were crowned champions in 2018/19. For the last two years, the the competition has either been curtailed or hasn’t taken place, due to the pandemic.
