Leeds United Under-21s will be keen to bounce back from defeat last time out in the Premier League 2, as attentions turn to National League Cup duties with a midweek trip to Gateshead on Wednesday evening.
Scott Gardner’s side had been in scintillating form, winning five matches on the spin in all competitions, before being narrowly edged out by Newcastle United U21s over the weekend, despite Rhys Chadwick’s thunderous first-half strike initially levelling proceedings at Thorp Arch.
In their one clash to date in the brand-new competition, Leeds came out on top in a seven-goal thriller over Boston United.
Fighting back from behind on three occasions, in-form striker Luca Thomas won it for the Whites late on with a superb effort from outside the area.
United currently sit top of Group C by virtue of goals scored, with Gateshead having edged past Middlesbrough U21s 1-0 in their previous fixture courtesy of Jovan Malcolm’s first-half goal.
The Tynesiders have enjoyed a superb start to the new Vanarama National League campaign under Carl Magnay, currently sitting just two points adrift of leaders York City.
Last season proved to be a successful one for the side, finishing in the Play-Off positions and also lifting the FA Trophy after beating Solihull Moors on penalties in the final under the Wembley arch.
Action from the Gateshead International Stadium gets underway at 7:30pm.
