February marks LGBT+ History Month and once again Marching Out Together have been working closely with the club to raise awareness and celebrate the occasion, with various activities and workshops delivered through the Leeds United Foundation and the Leeds United Academy.
Hear from out official LGBT+ supporter's group below:
Being asked to write a piece that marks LGBT+ History Month within football isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Football, especially the men’s game, does not have a history of including or celebrating the LGBT+ community and for decades the failure of football to challenge homophobia in the sport was defined by the tragic story of Justin Fashanu.
Fortunately, we are living in a time when new, more positive history is being written. The vocal support Jakub Jankto (the third professional male player to come out in a year) received earlier this month is a sign of how things are continuing to change for the better.
Leeds United fans can continue to be proud of the leading work our club does, along with Marching Out Together, to support LGBT+ inclusion and ensure everyone can feel safe at Elland Road. Leeds United created its own historic footballing milestone last summer when Luke Ayling became the first Premier League player to join a Pride parade in the UK.
However, despite the support of most fans, offensive chanting and individual abuse can still be heard at some games. If you hear a fan using any discriminatory language (including racist and other forms of abuse) it can be difficult, especially at away games, to feel brave enough to call it out and challenge it. If you do see someone who does have the courage to challenge it though, please do everything you can to support them at that time. It really does make a difference!
Let’s do everything we can to consign homophobic (racist and other) abuse to footballing history and help to ensure that LGBT+ inclusion in football has a brighter future than its dark history.
Marching Out Together.
