Leeds United Academy star Harry Gray scored his first senior goal as Rotherham United came from behind to beat Northampton Town 2-1 in League One.
The 17-year-old, on loan from Elland Road, played the full 90 minutes and levelled the scores on 58 minutes, brilliantly heading Joe Powell’s cross in at the near post to make it 1-1 and open his account in senior football.
At 17 years and 111 days, Gray became Rotherham’s youngest ever goalscorer, beating the previous club record set by Trevor Phillips in February 1970.
His goal sparked the comeback, with fellow January arrival Emmanuel Adegboyega netting late on to secure a vital win that moves Rotherham to within two points of 21st-placed Doncaster.
In his third appearance for the Millers - after games against Stockport and AFC Wimbledon - Gray registered 33 touches, two shots on target, won three duels and covered 142.3 metres with the ball.
Speaking after the match, Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw highlighted the importance of the teenager’s impact.
“We’re a bit low on confidence, on a run of defeats and then all of a sudden we get a bit of a spark,” Hamshaw said.
“Harry scores his first senior goal which is amazing for him and it couldn’t have gone better with Manny Adegboyega scoring. They’re two players we’ve brought in this window and they’ve made a huge impact.”
