Speaking after guiding Leeds United to a first league victory at Old Trafford since 1981, manager Daniel Farke was delighted his team were able to secure all three points against their fierce rivals.
The Whites raced into a two-goal lead through Noah Okafor’s brace and, despite the hosts pulling one back late on, saw the game out to get back to winning ways in memorable fashion.
“I am of course very proud,” the boss began after the full-time whistle. “It feels of course outstanding, especially under the circumstances – crunch time period of the season, a bit under pressure playing the last fixture of the game day, we also didn’t have the easiest week.
“Key players out, Anton Stach, Joe Rodon, Daniel James, also several other key players have a difficult week in terms of training in Gabi Gudmundsson, Jaka Bijol and Noah Okafor.
“I think the key was today to be brave and to play on the front foot because if you just try to park the bus and just try to survive somehow and suffer here, there is no chance to travel away with points at Old Trafford.
“We wanted to dominate as many periods as possible, also in possession, and I think we were brave in our pressing. First half was excellent.
“We could have been easily three or four-nil up until now. Also started really well into the second half but of course also, we are not the finished end product.
“We are a newly promoted side. We are not immaculate. Sometimes we are here and there was a mistake, and on the other side, there is a top-class side. They could bring quality players from the bench.
“But I think there is no doubt that we deserved today to win this game and to have this excellent night for everyone who is connected with Leeds United and, of course, a massive, massive step forward in terms of points also to achieve our goals.
“We worked a little bit to get rid of this old narrative, ‘Leeds are falling apart again’, that we always crumble when it really counts. It feels like when it really matters, we deliver under pressure. Not just this season but also last season.
“Nothing is achieved yet so for that I am far away of not staying humble, not staying grounded, being overconfident. So, I am proud of this win, we take confidence out of this but we don’t forget where we are coming from.
“On Premier League level, the momentum can change pretty, pretty quickly. We have to stay on it. We want to keep going.”
