As part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2026, the Leeds United Foundation highlighted the impact of creativity, connection and taking action through its Ups and Downs Café sessions at Elland Road.

Mental Health Awareness Week spanned between 11th and 17th May, and to commemorate, lifelong Leeds United supporter Richard Naylor was present to share his journey and artwork at one of the sessions.

The Ups and Downs Café is delivered every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and is funded by the Premier League Players' Fund, providing a safe and welcoming space where people can come together, socialise and support their mental wellbeing.

A childhood Leeds fan, Richard rediscovered his passion for art in 2020 as he utilised the activity to positively manage his wellbeing alongside making lifestyle changes including giving up drinking.

One of his proudest moments came when he painted Marcelo Bielsa as a 70th birthday gift for his dad, giving him the confidence to continue and share his work more widely. Today, his art combines his love of football and creativity, capturing special Leeds United moments that resonate with fellow supporters.

In line with this year’s theme of 'Action', Richard’s story shows how simple steps, like returning to a hobby or connecting with others, can have a powerful impact on mental health. His visit to the Ups & Downs Café sparked conversations, inspired others and reinforced the importance of finding positive outlets.

The Ups & Downs Café continues to play a vital role in supporting people across the community, offering a space where individuals can talk, connect and take steps towards improved wellbeing. To learn more about the sessions, and how you can get involved, please email [email protected].
