Leeds United’s fixture against Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday will be dedicated to supporting Stonewall’s annual Rainbow Laces campaign.
The club is proud, along with other football clubs across the country this month, to raise awareness and show support for the initiative that encourages everyone involved in the sport across the UK, whether it is players, fans, staff, referees or match officials, to show their support for the LGBT+ community.
The campaign is specifically aimed at promoting diversity and inclusivity in all areas of football, both on and off the pitch, whilst promoting the important message of having respect for LGBT+ people and encouraging communities to participate in something active in the name of LGBT+ equality in sport.
To help celebrate the occasion there will be members of Marching Out Together, the club’s official LGBT+ supporter group, who will be joined by family members to hold flags at the side of the pitch as the players emerge from the tunnel ahead of kick-off on Saturday afternoon.
The club has also organised for rainbow corner flags to be used during the match with the club captain set to wear the official rainbow captain’s armband for the match.
One Marching Out Together member, Abbey who is aged 15, said: “Being a Season Ticket Holder at Leeds United is so important to my family and me and seeing the work of Marching Out Together and their rainbow flag being displayed so clearly in the stadium has really helped me to always feel safe and accepted at Elland Road.
“Being part of this fanbase means so much to me and I cannot express enough how proud I am to support a club with such a strong LGBT+ supporters group. All Leeds Aren’t We”.
Board member, Maz Ferguson, added: “We are delighted that during the Rainbow Laces campaign this year the club is stocking limited edition Marching Out Together scarves and badges in its stores - so we would like to encourage all friends and allies to go along and demonstrate your support by buying this special merchandise. Thanks once again to everyone at the club for your fantastic support.”
