Calvert-Lewin strike voted December’s JD Sports Goal of the Month

DCL December Goal of the Month

Leeds United supporters have voted Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s superb equaliser against Sunderland as the club’s JD Sports Goal of the Month for December.

The striker’s 47th-minute finish at the Stadium of Light was not only a landmark moment individually, but also a perfect illustration of Leeds United’s team-first approach, with all 11 players involved in the move that led to the goal.

Scored in the 1-1 draw on Sunday 28 December, the strike saw Calvert-Lewin become the first Leeds United player to score in six consecutive Premier League matches, continuing an impressive run of form through the festive period.

The move began deep inside Leeds’ own half with Jaka Bijol, whose calm use of possession helped initiate a flowing passage of play. Leeds worked the ball patiently through midfield before Brenden Aaronson provided the decisive touch, threading a perfectly weighted pass through the Sunderland back line for Calvert-Lewin to finish confidently, cancelling out Simon Adingra’s first-half opener.

Speaking after being named JD Sports Goal of the Month winner, Calvert-Lewin was quick to praise his teammates’ role in the strike.

“It feels good to pick up this award, but I think probably the whole team should’ve got this one for the goal,” he said. “I was just there to put it in the back of the net but it’s definitely one of the better team goals we’ve scored.”

The goal stood out not just for its finish, but for the cohesion and control shown in the build-up, drawing acclaim from supporters and earning top spot in the December vote.
