Brian McDermott is hoping Ross McCormack can join an exclusive list of Leeds United marksmen by ending the season with 30 goals.

The Scottish international has scored 28 this season, 27 of them coming in the league, and is on the verge of joining an illustrious list of men to score 30 in a season for the club.

“I’d love to see him get there this season,” said the boss. “It’d be a great achievement. He’s the top scorer in the Championship, and to be captain as well…It’s a massive honour.”

Jermaine Beckford is the most recent goalscorer to achieve the feat. He scored 31 goals in 2009/10, 25 coming in the league, and 34 the previous season, 27 of which came in the league.

Beckford was the first man to hit 30 goals in a season since Lee Chapman scored 31 goals in the 1990/91 season.

Prior to that, Peter Lorimer hit 30 in 1967/68 and the great John Charles did it twice, scoring 39 (1956/57) and 43 (1953/54).

Tom Jennings is the only other player to score 30 in a season, and he bagged 37 in 1926/27.
