FOCUS NOW ON BRIGHTON

David Hockaday talks Brighton…

United head coach David Hockaday says that his side can not dwell on the positive Middlesbrough result as attentions now turn to Brighton.

United were winners against the early promotion hopefuls on Saturday thanks to a goal from Billy Sharp but now the focus is firmly on the next game.

Brighton travel to Elland Road on Tuesday evening (7.45pm) for what will be United’s third game at home in the space of a week.

“It was a great day for us,” said the head coach. “I know the supporters appreciated the efforts of the players, we kept a cleansheet and to beat one of the favourites for the promotion places was very pleasing.

“But it was only one game and we have got a very awkward game coming up against Brighton and we have been focusing all our attentions on recovering properly and preparing for Brighton on Tuesday.

“I’m really happy with the result but we can not dwell on past glories. We had a great team performance with a great atmosphere but we have a game coming up that we need to focus on.”

United beat Accrington Stanley (2-1) and Middlesbrough (1-0) at Elland Road last week and the head coach wants to see the same effort from his players.

“The next game is at home and I want the same things,” he said. “I want a cleansheet, a good team work ethic and I want an honest performance.

“If a team beat us and we are at it then fair play to them.

“We want to make Elland Road a fortress, on and off the field of play. We need it to be a horrible place to come for opposing teams.

"We think we did that on Saturday, I don’t think Middlesbrough enjoyed anything about the day once we got going.

“We want more from the players and the fans, lets make Elland Road a difficult place to play for opposing teams to come.”

Brighton have started the season with two 1-0 defeats but the head coach says that means nothing and is predicting an awkward contest on Tuesday evening.

“They have had a poor start points wise,” said Hockaday. “They have had two narrow defeats and they will come to Elland Road smarting and will be desperate for points.

“They are a very awkward team to play against. They keep the ball well and they move it about well.

“If anybody thinks this game is going to be anything but a tough competition then think again.

“We need to get the players grounded and they need to put in the same amount of effort as they did, or even more, against Middlesbrough then it will take a good team to beat us.”
