BIRMINGHAM CITY: THEY PLAYED FOR BOTH

We look at 11 players who played for the Whites and the Blues.

Jack Butland

The goalkeeper came through the ranks at Birmingham City and some impressive performances earned him a move to Stoke City, from whom he had a loan spell at Leeds.  Butland is now a full England international, with six caps.

Paul Robinson

Veteran defender Robinson signed a new one year contract extension with Birmingham in the summer and the 39 year-old has made over 170 appearances for the St Andrew’s outfit.  He had a short loan spell at Leeds in 2012 from Bolton Wanderers.

Kyle Bartley

A crowd favourite at Elland Road following his loan spell from Swansea City last season, defender Bartley is now back at the Liberty Stadium.  The former Arsenal trainee also had a loan spell with Birmingham from Swansea during the 2013/14 campaign.

Steven Caldwell

Starting his career at Newcastle United, the defender had a loan spell at Leeds in 2004, making 13 appearances for the club.  He also played for Blackpool, Bradford City, Sunderland, Burnley, Wigan Athletic and Birmingham and is now in the MLS with Toronto FC.

Jermaine Pennant

The winger spent the 2003/04 season on loan at Leeds from Arsenal where he began his career.  After that spell he joined Birmingham on loan, before that move was made permanent.  He also played for Liverpool and Stoke City and last season had a short spell at Bury.

Lee Bowyer
Another favourite at Leeds, due to his performances during the Premier League and Champions League era with the Whites, Bowyer went on to join Birmingham later in his career after time at West Ham United and Newcastle United.  With the Blues he won the League Cup in 2011.

Neil Kilkenny

Like Bartley and Pennant, Kilkenny also started his career with Arsenal, before being snapped up by Birmingham in 2004.  The midfielder signed for Leeds in 2008 from the Blues and helped the Whites win promotion back to the Championship in 2010.

Andros Townsend

The now Crystal Palace winger and England international had a short loan spell with Leeds in the 2011/12 season.  His temporary spell at Leeds was cut short having made just seven appearances and he spent the rest of the campaign with Birmingham.

Gary McSheffrey
Starting out at Coventry City, where he made his debut as a 16-year-old, forward Gary McSheffrey joined Birmingham  in 2006.  He had a loan spell at Elland Road from the Blues in 2010, before returning to boyhood club Coventry at the end of the 2009/10 season.

Robbie Blake

The forward signed for Birmingham in January 2005, but made just 13 appearances in all competitions, before joining the Whites six months later, spending two seasons at Elland Road.  He also had spells at Darlington, Bradford City, Nottingham Forest, Burnley, Bolton Wanderers and Doncaster Rovers.

Mikael Forsell
Finland international striker Forsell was brought to English football by Chelsea from HJK.  After two loan spells at Birmingham, he signed for the Blues on a permanent basis in 2005.  After time at Hannover 96, he spent the 2011/12 season at Leeds and is still playing in Finland.
