GARRY MONK: AN IMPORTANT THREE POINTS

Head coach on Sheffield Wednesday victory.

Leeds United head coach Garry Monk spoke exclusively to LUTV’s Eddie Gray following Saturday’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls and the Whites were tied on points in fifth and sixth spot going into the fixture and the victory was a boost to United as the race for the Play-Offs and promotion heats up.

Leeds’ head coach was delighted with the victory, as the Whites made it three games unbeaten in the Sky Bet Championship and recorded an eighth win in nine matches at Elland Road.

“It was an important win and an important three points,” said Monk.

“It was a typical derby, it was passionate, but I thought we did very well, particularly in the first half where we took the ascendancy and looked to create.

“As we expected, they came at us in the second half, but other than their penalty they didn’t have a clear opportunity.

“It was a fantastic penalty save from Rob Green, it was a very important save in a crucial moment of the game.

“We felt moments earlier we could have had a penalty of our own on Eunan O’Kane, which we felt was clear cut.

“I thought we managed the game and periods of pressure really well and overall I don’t think we faced a shot on target which is very pleasing.”

Despite the win moving Leeds up to fourth spot in the division, United’s head coach is refusing to get carried away.

He said: “We are all aware of where we are in the league, but we can only focus on the next three points.

“There is still a lot of football still to play this season, we are in a good position and doing well, but we can’t take our eye off the ball now.”
