Rocastle joined Leeds, then defending Champions, in a club record £2 million deal from Arsenal.  His signing, by Howard Wilkinson, was seen as a masterstroke of transfer dealing, yet throughout his 14-month stay at Elland Road Rocastle rarely played and never enjoyed an extended run in the side.  When he did play, though “Rocky” was stylish and skilful, and supporters always wanted more.  A former England international, Rocastle arrived at Leeds determined to rebuild a career that had seen him win two titles and a League Cup with the Gunners.  Sadly it was not to be and Leeds swapped him with Maine Road winger David White, each valued at £2 million.  Rocastle died in 2002 after a long illness.

Strange but true: Rocky’s Leeds goals were scored against his next two clubs — Manchester City and Chelsea.
