Thanks to the work of the Leeds United Foundation, hundreds of pupils across the city have taken part in a national writing competition that has seen them create poems based around football themes.
The project, ran by the Leeds United Foundation and in conjunction with the Premier League Primary Stars initiative, has engaged with pupils to utilise both their creative and writing skills learnt during Foundation led education sessions.
Leeds United captain Liam Cooper recently visited Thorner Primary School where he took time to congratulate pupils who had shown outstanding poetry skills as part of the Writing Stars competition.
Pupils from Whitkirk Primary School, Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, St Mary’s CE Primary School, Seven Hills Primary School, Thorner Primary School, Lady Elizabeth Hastings and Park Spring Primary School have put their the poetry skills to the test.
As instructed by the Leeds United Foundation, pupils constructed poems around the theme of ‘resilience’ and saw pupils individually enter poems unique to them.
A winning entry will be selected from each school and will be awarded for their good work. Adding to the competition, all poems will be entered into the National ‘Writing Stars’ competition which will see the winner walk away with top prizes.
The project is ran in conjunction with the Premier League and uses the power of football to connect with young people to enjoy reading, learning and gain a greater enthusiasm in education.
Mat Everett, Foundation coach at the Leeds United Foundation, said: “We have been so impressed with all entries and all of the pupil’s hard work for the duration of the Writing Stars competition.
“We have seen so much improvement in the children’s writing since we started working with the schools. It has been a pleasure to work in several Leeds Primary School – even Kop Kat made an appearance to some our school assemblies!
“Good luck to all of the entrees!
