A former Leeds United Foundation BTEC Sports student has not only made his debut for the England Futsal team but has also become a champion after the national side walked away victorious at the Four Nations Tournament last week.
Before playing for the England Futsal side, Alex Turfrey studied on the club’s Foundation’s BTEC Level Three course where he studied in Sport and Excellence. Since graduating from the course in 2015, Alex has developed and progressed in not only sports education but his futsal career.
During his time at the Foundation, Alex not only studied sports theory on his BTEC course but also integrated playing Futsal as part of his course and played for the club’s Foundation in the Futsal leagues.
After finishing at the club’s Foundation, Alex progressed to study at University level and attended Loughborough University where he studied a BSc in Sports Coaching. During his time at University, Alex continued his playing career with Loughborough Futsal – a sport he found whilst studying at the Foundation.
Michael Kinsey, Premier League Programme Manager, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Alex and we couldn’t be prouder of him for playing for England.
“The Education programme here at the Foundation offers 100s of students the chance to progress in sport and offers opportunities for learning and pathways in to further education, coaching and professional play.”
Alex Turfrey, aged 21, said: "It was an honour for me to represent England at the Four Nations last week and has been what all the training has been leading up to. My time at the Foundation grounded me in both the education side and the practical side including Futsal.
"It was from here that led me to pursue the sport at a higher level. I would like to say thanks to all the Foundation coaches for their time whilst I was there."
Alex now joins another former Foundation student, Joe Kenny, in representing the national team in Futsal.
