FA Youth Cup Third Round
Burnley 1 (Cropper 84) Leeds United 0
Leeds United’s Under-18s exited the FA Youth Cup in the Third Round after suffering a harsh 1-0 defeat against Burnley, despite dominating at Turf Moor.
A number of Whites prospects, such as Jack Clarke, Robbie Gotts, Liam Kitching and Kun Temenuzhkov who have all featured for the Under-23s side this season, were all made available for selection, as Mark Jackson’s side made the trip across the Pennines.
Leeds made a positive start to the match, Oliver Casey played Kun Temenuzhkov into the Burnley penalty area, but he could only fire wide from a narrow angle.
The Whites then had a big chance from a corner, Liam Kitching headed just wide following Callum Nicell’s delivery.
Burnley came into the match after the 20 minute mark, but created little and failed to test Harrison Male in the Leeds goal.
United again threatened from another corner, Kitching again made contact with a Nicell delivery, but he couldn’t keep his header down.
Some good build up play down the left flank between Jack Clarke and Robbie Gotts saw the latter put a neat low ball into the penalty area for Temenuzhkov, but he was unable to control and the chance went begging.
Half Time: Burnley 0-0 Leeds United
The home side came out of the blocks in the second half and Dwight McNeil had their first opportunity on goal, he fired just wide from the edge of the box.
Clarke then did really well to get to the byline and he played the ball across the face of goal, but no Leeds player could get on the end of it. The ball then fell to Jamie Shackleton, but he could only strike wide from the edge of the box.
Clarke continued to threaten for the Whites in the second period, he put a cross into the box and Bruce couldn’t punch it away, the ball fell to Temenuzhkov who tried a bicycle kick, but he couldn’t make contact.
The impressive Bobby Kamwa in the middle of the park then played in Clarke, but he fired a driven effort into the side netting from a narrow angle.
Kamwa then twice tried his luck from range, the first was well saved by Bruce and he was unable to find the target with the second.
Temenuzhkov then turned provider when he put a lovely low cross into the Burnley box, Clarke got on the end of it at the back post, but he could only fire off target.
Leeds were throwing the kitchen sink at the Clarets, Kamwa and Shackleton both saw good opportunities superbly blocked at the last, whilst Temenuzhkov couldn’t get the better of Bruce.
Completely against the run of play, Burnley took the lead, Jordan Cropper superbly found the bottom left corner from 25 yards.
The Whites continued to push for a leveller after the goal, but the home side had their goalkeeper to thank, first Kamwa saw a curling effort from the box superbly saved, before Bruce provided more heroics to deny Clarke’s 30 yard free-kick, to ensure the Clarets progressed to the next round.
