Nottingham Forest 1 (Gomis 50) Leeds United 1 (Rey 7)
Midfielder Oriol Rey scored a sensational volley as the Whites Under-23s picked up a point on the road against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
The home side won an early corner and pressed Leeds, Virgil Gomis had a chance when he found space inside the box, but he could only slice wide.
Leeds took the lead in the seventh minute, Bryce Hosannah did well on the right and forced Jordan Wright into a good save from a narrow angle, the ball then fell to Rey on the edge of the box and he fired home a superb volley to put the Whites in front.
The Whites should have gone further ahead nine minutes later, Ousama Siddiki put in a fine cross, which was met by Jamie Shackleton, but he could only put his header over the crossbar.
Hosannah continued to cause the Nottingham defence problems, he powered forward, before entering the penalty area, before shooting, but his effort went wide.
Tom Pearce then did well to break down the left flank, he broke into the Forest box, but was unable to get the better of Wright from a narrow angle.
More good play from the Whites, who dominated the first half came when Liam Kitching played Pearce into the area, he tried to square the ball to Siddiki for a tap-in, but his ball was intercepted by a last ditch challenge.
The home side had a late chance at the end of the first half, when Jake Taylor whipped in a good cross, but Gomis could only fire a bicycle kick off target.
Half Time: Nottingham Forest 0-1 Leeds United
Leeds made one change at the break, with Jack Clarke replacing the injured Hosannah and the Whites made a good start to the second period, Siddiki showed great strength to get to the byline, before trying to square the ball across goal, but Wright made a vital interception.
Forest pulled level in the 50th minute, Danny Preston put a delightful low cross into the Leeds box and Gomis couldn’t miss from eight yards.
Three minutes later, Rey once again tried his luck from range, but the impressive Wright prevented him from adding to his tally.
Forest then had the ball in the net when Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel smashed home a through ball from Lewis Walters, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
From that decision, Leeds broke up-field and Siddiki put Shackleton through on goal with a fine back heel, but Shackleton was unable to beat Wright who made another brilliant stop.
Substitute Alex Machuca then did well to turn and work space for a shot in the Forest box, but his low effort couldn’t beat Wright.
Forest forward Gomis went one-on-on with Harrison Male, the Leeds stopper got a touch, but with the ball destined for the net, Paudie O’Connor made an amazing goal-line clearance to keep the scores level.
Jack McKay then picked up the ball in the Forest box, but his effort couldn’t beat Wright in the Forest goal.
Joe Coveney went close from a Forest free-kick nine minutes from time, his effort from the left flank went right through everyone and as it headed for the bottom right corner, Male made a superb flying save.
Male made a good stop to deny Walters, with Wright also denying Rey from distance at the other end.
Three minutes from time, a poor Forest pass let Leeds in, Machuca drove forwards and went for goal himself, but once again Wright produced a brilliant stop, before recovering and denying Clarke from a narrow angle.
Both sides pushed for late winners in stoppage time, but the two sides were made to settle for a point a piece in an entertaining match.
