Leeds United Women were left to rue missed chances as they fell to a 2-0 defeat in the League Cup against York City Ladies.

The Whites came into the game seeking a response from last week’s 3-1 defeat at Norton & Stockton and the first half performance was exactly what Rick Passmoor would’ve been looking for.

Despite York having the first chance through former Leeds United player Alice Hughes’ free-kick, the visitors went on to dominate the second half, creating a number of clear-cut chances that could’ve seen the result wrapped up at half time.

Wingers Abbie Brown and Macey Ellis were causing York all kinds of problems. Brown’s first sight of goal on five minutes saw her fire over from a tight angle.

The two combined on eight minutes, with Brown driving through the middle and playing Ellis through, her effort was saved by York keeper Rebecca Sidwell, the first of a string of first-half saves that kept her side in the game.

Ellis then saw an effort crash off the crossbar after she latched onto a mis-hit shot from Kathryn Smith.

Ellis’ pace and runs in behind were proving particularly difficult to handle for York, she had two one-on-one chances but again could not find a way past Sidwell. The York stopper then did well to palm Rebekah Bass’ cross away and deny Amy Woodruff a tap in.

Leeds’ joy out wide continued as Brown skipped past the full back and delivered a brilliant low cross but no Leeds player was on hand to tap home.

Ellis and Brown combined again on 25 minutes, the latter firing wide from a cut back on her weaker right foot. Leeds continued to create but were again denied by Sidwell on 38 minutes when she saved with her feet from Woodruff.

York’s best effort of the half came in first half stoppage time when Jess Holder’s strike from distance crashed off the crossbar.

HALF TIME: York City Ladies  0 –  0 Leeds United

The Whites were punished for all those missed chances when York took the lead on 54 minutes through substitute Nicola Brown.

After taking the lead the hosts managed to control the game, the Whites struggling to create as freely as they were in the first half.

York’s lead was doubled on 73 minutes, Jess Heald with a left-footed strike from distance that nestled in the bottom corner.

Leeds continued to press but were left frustrated by York who were much more solid defensively in the second half, the closest they came to halving the deficit was through Danielle Whitham’s drive that came off the foot of the post.

Leeds are back in league action next weekend with a local derby against Bradford City as they look to bounce back from successive defeats.
