Preview: Leeds United Women vs Alnwick Town Ladies

Whites in action at Elland Road!

Leeds United Women are taking on Alnwick Town in their final home match of the FAWNL Division One North season, at Elland Road (2pm).

Dan O’Hearne’s side will run out on Sunday afternoon looking to use a strong home support on home turf to their advantage, against a side who are yet to win in the league this season.

The Whites will be hoping to bounce back after putting in a spirited display in the County Cup final on Thursday night. A penalty shoot-out defeat against higher-division Brighouse Town was a tough way for the cup to be decided, but the performance was a positive one.

The visitors come into the match struggling in the league so far this season. However, they have been dangerous in front of goal lately, netting five times in their last two games despite them not picking up three points.

When the two teams met earlier in the season, it was Leeds who ran out winners in a closely contested match at St James Park. Olivia Smart netted the only goal of the game to secure the points in that one.

Leeds are currently 3rd in the table, with Liverpool Feds and Newcastle United above them, fighting it out for the league title. After 18 matches, O’Hearne’s side have amassed 30 points and will be hoping for a strong finish to the campaign.

Alnwick are bottom of the table with just two points from their 16 matches. However, the Whites will be fully aware of their opposition and the desire from them to finish the season strongly, as well as the goalscoring threat of top-scorer Michelle Stewart.
