Stockport County Ladies ran out 4-2 winners at Edgeley Park meaning the hosts took the points, despite Leeds United Women pushing for an equaliser late in the game, aiming for a second half turnaround away from home.

In the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season, it was the Whites who came out on top courtesy of a brilliant Kirstie Hunt finish late in the game, but this encounter was to tell a different story.

Emma Lyons put the hosts 1-0 up inside three minutes. A long ball over the top caused confusion at the back for Leeds and despite the best efforts from ‘keeper Lauren Joyce, she couldn’t keep the close-range effort out of the net.

Leeds had a great chance to equalise just minutes later, though, in what had been a fast start to the game. Amy Woodruff played a lovely ball through to Kathryn Smith, but her curling effort skimmed the crossbar.

On the 10-minute mark, County doubled their lead. Maria Figueirdo played a low ball across the face of goal and Jess Battle, who was unmarked, tapped into an empty net to make it two.

The Whites began to play more of their football and were enjoying more possession despite being behind. Olivia smart pressed high and won the ball back in a dangerous area, she crossed the ball, but Laura Bartrup’s first time effort just went wide.

Just moments later Smart and Bartup linked up again and another dangerous cross from Smart found Bartrup through on goal, but her first touch just got away from her and trickled through to the keeper.

On the stroke of half time the hosts made it 3-0 in what was a tough blow for Dan O’Hearne’s side shortly before the interval. Battle played the ball through to Figueirdo and her low right footed effort found the bottom corner of the goal.

HALF TIME: Stockport County Women 3-0 Leeds United Women

County started the second half well and came close early on two occasions. Figueirdo firstly put her effort wide, then Battle blazed a volley wide of he goal as well.

Substitute Abbie Brown then had a good chance to bring a goal back having been recently introduced. Bartup found her in acres of space on the right-hand side, but she could only drag her effort just past the post.

The lively Figueirdo had another great chance to double her goal tally for the night but stand in ‘keeper Savannah Robson produced a great save with her feet to keep the attackers effort out, after Joyce had been forced off the pitch through injury.

With 15 minutes to go Sarah Danby was brought down in the box and Leeds were awarded a penalty. Kanisha-Mae Underwood stepped up to take the penalty and found the bottom left corner to give the Whites some hope.

Just minutes later, Leeds pulled another goal back thanks to a top-class strike from Sarah Danby. She hit a thunderbolt of an effort from 25-yards out and her unstoppable shot found the top corner to set up a nervy finish for the hosts.

In the dying moments of the game Libby Dixon made it 4-2 to deny any further hopes of a full turnaround. Her effort from the edge of the box went into the top corner, leaving Robson with no chance.

It was too little too late for the visitors and the hosts went home with the three points. Leeds now head to Norton & Stockton Ancients in hope of bouncing back at the weekend.
