Leeds United Women bowed out of the FA National Women’s League Plate, as hosts Alnwick booked a place in the last eight of the competition with a goal in either half at St James’ Park.
This last 16 encounter started at a fast pace with Chloe Young shooting straight at United goalkeeper Lauren Joyce, after just four minutes.
Sandra Soares-Martins then forced a brilliant save from Katy Stark down the other end as Leeds looked to take the game to Alnwick.
Whites midfielder Kathryn Smith then came close on two occasions, as did Soares-Martins once again.
Michelle Stewart gave the home side the lead by firing in low after 23 minutes, after the Town forward had found space in the area to control and finish.
In the last action before the interval, Joyce had to be alert to make a brilliant save to deny Orla Callaghan a certain second goal.

The home side started out on the attack straight from kick-off in the second half, with Stewart seeing her cross dip just past the post, before Callaghan then fired just over.
Alnwick did keep up the pressure and doubled their lead when Lucy McConnell tapped in after 57 minutes, giving Leeds an uphill task in the match.
Substitute Kanisha Mae-Underdown attempted to make an immediate impact saw her shot tipped round the post, before Joyce impressed again, denying Callaghan at the other end.
Leeds kept pushing with Paige Williams and Bridie Hannon both having efforts saved when going in search of a way back into the game.
However, Alnwick saw out the final few minutes and progressed through and book a place in the last eight of the competition.
