HUGHESY JOINS SCUNTHORPE

Long-serving departure to Glanford Park...

Andy Hughes celebrates

Long-serving utility man Andrew Hughes has joined Scunthorpe United on an 18-month contract.

The versatile player completed a medical with the Iron on Friday morning before penning an 18-month deal with Scunthorpe having a further year's option.

Hughesy represented one of the few remaining links with the start of the infamous 15-point deduction season, and he has spent the past three-and-a-half years at Leeds United.

The 33-year-old, who signed for the club on the same day that the Football League sanction was imposed, made 139 appearances, scoring his only goal at Millwall in 2008 on a day when we would have clinched automatic promotion had it not been for the deduction.

He played in numerous roles during his time at the club, having played all across the midfield and in both full-back positions.

An honest grafter, Hughesy was also popular with fans and his robotic dancing after promotion was clinched in May has become something of a cult video clip.

United manager Simon Grayson said: "Hughesy has been a big part of things here, going back to before I came to the club.

"He joined at what some would have considered a difficult time and he has been a great servant during his time with the club. He was always willing to step in and do whatever was asked of him.

"The move to Scunthorpe offers him an opportunity to play regular football again, and on behalf of everyone at Leeds United, I would like to thank him for all his efforts and wish him all the very best at Scunthorpe."

Hughesy says farewell on the Countdown To Kick-Off (Friday 6pm-7pm and Saturday 9am-10am)...
