First team coach and lead development coach Neil Redfearn says Alex Mowatt’s first team call-up is another boost for the club’s Academy system.

The 18-year-old, who signed his first professional deal at the end of last season, was handed his first team debut at Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday evening.

The central midfielder has caught the eye over the summer and impressed in the Development Squad friendlies at Shelbourne and Colwyn Bay.

“He’s come back and done very well,” said Redfearn. “He’s had a great pre-season.

“He’s a perfect example of that development group. He’s had first team exposure in training. He’s got great feet, vision, a good left foot, he’s physically capable, he’s got an eye for goal, he’s good with dead ball situations, and he’s made a massive impression.

“The good thing is that we have got him in early. You are looking to bring at least one through every season – you’d like to bring more through - and if Alex does well we’re on track already which is really encouraging for everyone.

“He’s a good benchmark for us in terms of what we are looking to achieve here.”

Brian McDermott has said he has no issues with giving youth its chance, and the appointment of Redfearn as first team coach, coupled with his Development Squad duties, will assist with the pathway for young players to progress.

“The big thing is that Brian watches absolutely everything and he is aware of everything at the club,” said Redfearn.

“We work very closely and talk about players and who is coming through.

“When Nigel (assistant manager, Nigel Gibbs) takes players up in training it is a big part of the process. He’s looking at anything and everything you can utilise, and there is a great attitude that if they’re good enough they’re old enough.”
