EVANS GLAD TO GRIND OUT THE WIN

The head coach reflects on Saturday's 1-0 victory over Bristol City...

Steve Evans admitted his side "ground out" the three points following Saturday’s 1-0 home victory over Bristol City.

Souleymane Doukara’s second-half strike - his third goal from four games - proved to be the difference at Elland Road on an afternoon when Evans felt his side were under-par for large parts of the contest.

But the win, United’s first in the Championship in 2016, ended a run of five games without tasting victory in the league and provided a welcome boost ahead of the midweek trip to Brentford.

“It wasn't the best performance by any stretch,” Evans said. “But the finish was worthy of winning the game. We happily take the three points.

"It's important to get back to winning ways. The performance still needs to get better but there has been lots of determination on show.

“The first half wasn’t good enough – I’ve had better mornings at the dentist – but we recognised that and were a little bit better in the second.

“We closed it down more and got the goal. It became a gritty 1-0 win rather than a performance we’ll look back on with many aspects that we’re very pleased with.

“In the end we ground out a good win and we have to take that and move on to Brentford on Tuesday night.”
