STRIKER HAILS UNITED CHARACTER

Matt Smith hails his team-mates spirit after Watford draw…

United striker Matt Smith praised character of the team on Saturday after coming back from two goals down to gain a result against Watford.

The striker, who was a second half goalscorer, hailed the management and the skipper for their positive mood, following a rousing half-time team-talk.

“I think that we have got to be happy with the way the game went,” said Matt. “It was a strange game to be involved in.

“Credit has got to go to the management and the captain for their half time team talk.

“Personally I came in a little bit deflated after Watford scored their two goals on the break and I thought to myself, how are we going to get back into this game?

“But the mood was very positive and they said that we would go on and get the first goal of the second half, and the crowd would get behind us, which they did.

“It was one of those games. We got the lead but then Marius makes a match winning tackle at the end to get us a point.

“We are happy with the point and it keeps that undefeated run at home going. It shows tremendous character and we’ll move on."

The supporters inside Elland Road on Saturday really got behind the team in the second half, and the striker says that it helped towards the start to the seond half.

“Half time was crucial. It was a very upbeat and up-lifting talk, which led to us coming out with full momentum and force,” said Smith.

“I think they were a little taken aback with our start to the second half and the crowd really got behind us.

“I have never really heard anything like that in my life, the noise really spurred us on and it gave us that extra lift.”

Saturday’s draw against Watford kept United unbeaten at home since September 21 and the striker says it was important to keep that run going.

“It is nice mentally to keep that unbeaten run going,” added Matt. “The home form has been excellent, and Saturday was a different type of game.

“I thought that we would go on and win the game if I’m being perfectly honest.

“They looked very dangerous on the break as they have some quick players. But you can’t take anything away from the lads, we showed tremendous character and we got something out of the game.”
