Sam Allardyce’s side head to East London this weekend, to take on West Ham United in their penultimate match of the 2022/23 Premier League season. Ben Scott takes a look back at memorable matches between the two teams over the years.

Sunday will see Leeds United aiming for a second successive win against West Ham United at the London Stadium. United won 3-2 in January 2022, on their last visit.

It will also be a second season running where Leeds have ended their away matches in the capital. A 2-1 victory at Brentford last season sparked celebrations courtesy of a Raphinha penalty-kick and a Jack Harrison strike in stoppage time, sealing a happy away day.

Harrison was hero of the day when Leeds won in January 2022 at West Ham, on that day he hammered home a hat-trick that well and truly burst the bubble of the hosts!

Leeds United after formation in the October of 1919 would wait until 6 December of 1958 before registering their first win at the former home of the Hammers, the Boleyn Ground – Upton Park. Visits into East London were often a rare thing as both clubs flitted between the top two divisions and then little or only regional games taking place, during the periods of WW1 & WW2.

Leeds grabbed the 3-2 win in December 1958 through a penalty-kick, an own-goal and also a strike from Jack Overfield.

The first day of May in 1999 brought about Leeds’ biggest ever victory at West Ham as they ran riot with a 5-1 success.

The Whites wasted little time in asserting themselves on the hosts the match not yet 60 seconds old when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink from near the penalty spot unleashed a shot past Shaka Hislop.

As the break neared, Leeds moved the ball down the left – flank and as Hislop came charging out the ball was cut back for Alan Smith who had timed his run perfectly and his tap in made it 2-0.

After the interval, the Hammers scored what would be a consolation goal. Before Leeds lashed home three goals in 17 minutes on 62 minutes Ian Harte cooly buried a penalty – kick , won by Hasselbaink.

A short 16 minutes later, Alfie Haaland’s pass went into the feet of Hasselbaink, who whipped in a deadly shot from from outside of the penalty area.

It was almost a case of déjà vu a minute later when Haaland was again overlapping on the right and Hasselbaink had another assist, this time for Haaland, as he burst into the box and hit the ball into the bottom corner from seven yards.

Leeds visited the afore mentioned home ground was 10 November 2002 and it was an enjoyable one at that a 4-3 win the full-time result that would be the last top flight visit for Leeds.

But they did pick up a point in entertaining 2-2 match on 21 August 2011. Ross McCormack made the match 1-1 with 59 minutes played, but the hosts went back ahead three minutes later before Adam Clayton scored right at death making it 2-2 with only seconds left.

The midfielder fired home a smartly taken shot from the middle of the penalty area. That would be the last Leeds United visit the Boleyn Ground.
