Leeds United played out an entertaining two-all draw away at Manchester United, under the guidance of Michael Skubala, Chris Armas and Paco Gallardo - picking up a well deserved point from the game.

The Whites got off to the perfect start at Old Trafford, taking the lead inside the opening minute of the match.

In fine form and full of confidence, Willy Gnonto picked up the ball on the left-hand-side of the pitch and played a quick and clever one-two with Patrick Bamford, before racing towards goal and unleashing a superb low strike into the bottom corner.

With the pocket of already noisy travelling fans celebrating in the far corner, they had to endure a VAR check on Bamford in the build-up, but were relieved when nothing came of it and the goal was confirmed.

The coaching trio of Leeds were forced into an early change inside the opening 10 minutes. Luis Sinisterra pulled up with an injury and had to be replaced by Crysencio Summerville.

A minute after the substitution, an excellent David De Gea save denied Pascal Struijk’s back-post header when he looked almost certain to have made it two! However, the defender was the next to have to go off following a head injury - Junior Firpo came on in his place.

The biggest chance the Reds had to equalise fell to Garnacho again. He picked up a pass from Bruno Fernandes, rounded Illan Meslier and shot at goal, only to see Max Wober superbly position himself on the line to deny a certain goal.

After that big chance, the hosts then upped the tempo further and had more strikes on the Leeds goal. Meslier saved a header from Raphael Varane, before then acrobatically denying Marcel Sabitzer a short time later.

Following the stoppages for injury in the opening of the game, eight minutes were added at the end of the half.

Standing firm, the backline of Luke Ayling, Wober, Robin Koch and Firpo, along with Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie in front of them, remained together and got into the break with the lead after dealing superbly with the challenges they faced up to this point.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-1 Leeds United

Just how they had started the first, Leeds came out in the second half and did the exact same - finding the back of the net and doubling their advantage almost instantly!

The goal owed plenty of credit to the work of the whole team, but ultimately went into the back of the net off Varane, for an own goal. The central defender turned in Summerville’s cross, after Gnonto had played his fellow forward into the area.

Looking to respond to going two behind, on the hour mark Erik ten Hag introduced Jadon Sancho and Facundo Pellistri into the match. They replaced Garnacho and Wout Weghorst.

On 62 minutes, the home side did get back into the match through their top-scorer, Marcus Rashford. The forward had been quiet up to this point, but he flicked a clever header into the far corner from Diogo Dalot’s cross into the box.

It was then Leeds who made a double change. Bamford and Jack Harrison were replaced by Georginio Rutter and Brenden Aaronson - with the latter hitting the post from a free-kick seconds after entering the game!

Getting on level terms, Manchester United equalised in the 70th minute through second half substitute Sancho. Luke Shaw cut in from the left and had his cross blocked, only for Sancho to collect and fire low into the bottom corner for two-apiece.

Further chances came as both teams battled for a winner, in a match that had seen plenty of goalmouth action. Meslier had to be alert, denying Varane’s header before then making an even better stop from Rashford at close range.

When the full-time whistle sounded at Old Trafford - following more stoppage time at the end of the second 45 - the Whites had put in an excellent performance and were more than worthy of their point on the road.

The teams will battle it out again against one another at Elland Road on Sunday, in the return league fixture.
