Joe Gelhardt makes Sunderland loan move

Striker joins Black Cats.

Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt has today joined Sky Bet Championship side Sunderland on loan, until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 20-year-old links up with the Black Cats, who currently sit just one point outside of the Play-Off places, with 18 games remaining.

Gelhardt joined Leeds from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2020 and hit 11 goals in 16 games for the Under-23s during his first Premier League 2 campaign.

He went onto make his first team debut during the 2021/22 season, coming up with a number of crucial goals and assists to help retain the club’s Premier League status and has since gone on to amass a total of 41 appearances.

With the form of Rodrigo, the return to fitness of Patrick Bamford and the arrival of Georginio Rutter, Gelhardt has now been allowed to make a temporary switch in order to gain regular first team football, but very much remains part of the club’s long-term plans.

He will now be looking to help Sunderland earn a top six spot in the Championship come the end of the season and we would like to wish Joffy the best of luck during his stay at the Stadium of Light.
