Preview: Leeds United v Cardiff City

FA Cup replay at Elland Road.

Leeds United face Cardiff City on Wednesday evening, in a third round Emirates FA Cup replay (7:45pm).

After drawing the first fixture in South Wales in early January, the two teams now face off again, aiming to secure a place in the fourth round against either Boreham Wood or Accrington Stanley, away from home.

At the Cardiff City Stadium in the first match, Leeds began the game well but found themselves two goals behind at the break. A second half fightback from Jesse Marsch’s side saw Rodrigo pull one back, before fellow substitute Sonny Perkins netted a 93rd minute equaliser.

That meant the game now comes back to West Yorkshire as the teams aim to battle under the lights of Elland Road.

There have been changes at Cardiff since the first match. Dean Whitehead is now the Interim First Team Manager, taking on the role after Mark Hudson left the club over the weekend. Whitehead, a former player himself, will lead the club for the first time on Wednesday.

The Bluebirds come to Elland Road with a strong record over recent visits. From their last 12 matches, they have only lost once, which came back in November 2015. This is a first FA Cup match on home turf since January 2016 for Leeds, which was a 2-0 win over Rotherham United.

Despite matching up against one another on Wednesday night, either Leeds or Cardiff will not know their opponents for another week after Boreham Wood vs Accrington was postponed on Tuesday. They’ll now try again against each other on January 24th.

For those not attending, the match is live for supporters to watch on ITV4. Alternatively, you can stay right here on leedsunited.com for full updates on the game, or listen to live commentary on LUTV throughout the 90 minutes.

Head coach/interim manager:

Leeds: Jesse Marsch

Cardiff: Dean Whitehead

What has Jesse Marsch said, ahead of the match?

“It won’t be easy but we will be at home, the club hasn’t had a home FA Cup fixture in many years. We’re absolutely going out to win the match.”

Team news:

Jesse Marsch stated that Adam Forshaw, Crysencio Summerville, Stuart Dallas and Archie Gray will all be missing for the game, with captain Liam Cooper also a doubt. Luis Sinisterra is welcome boost though, with the winger now back in full training.

For Cardiff, Joel Bagan is back from his suspension after the red card in the previous match. However, Mahlon Romeo and Jamilu Collins remain out for now.
