Preview: Elche CF vs Leeds United

Whites take on La Liga opponents.

Leeds United will play a friendly against La Liga side, Elche CF on Thursday evening, getting underway at 8.15pm local time, which is 7.15pm UK time.

The game will be played at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero, which has a capacity of 33,734. Leeds United fans who have made the trip will be housed in the AFICIÓN VISITANTE section. Tickets can still be purchased for the match, HERE

Jesse Marsch’s side have been without a game since the middle of November, due to the league taking a break for the ongoing World Cup.

Prior to the break, the team had put in impressive displays in the Premier League during their final few matches, taking important wins over both Liverpool and AFC Bournemouth in that time.

This is now the first of three friendlies which the Whites will play over the coming days, with matches against Real Sociedad and AS Monaco set to follow at Elland Road upon the teams return from Spain.

Spanish side Elche have also been out of action for a while in the league, but did recently play a friendly themselves. They overcame Championship side West Bromwich Albion 1-0.

They are having a tough time of things in league action up to now, with no wins from their opening 14 matches of the campaign, leaving them bottom of the table. Last season though, Elche finished comfortably mid-table.

The head coach at Elche is 47-year-old, Pablo Machin. Born in Spain, he had a short playing career with Numancia at both B and first team level, throughout the 90’s. From then on, he went into coaching and has previously also managed Numancia, Girona, Sevilla and Espanyol, amongst others.

The Festa d'Elx Trophy…

The teams will be competing tonight for the Festa d'Elx Trophy, which is an annual football friendly trophy hosted by Thursday’s opponents. It was founded in 1960 and is regarded as the sixth oldest Spanish trophy.
