Tyler Adams: The first game is very important

Midfielder looks ahead to the World Cup.

Tyler Adams has given his thoughts ahead of this coming Monday, when his USA side will begin their World Cup campaign.

The midfielder is looking forward to the tournament getting underway and representing his nation.

First of all, Adams was pleased to hear himself selected in the squad when it was announced, a moment he dreamed about from a young age.

“It was a relief to hear your name selected,” the midfield said.

“It was a dream come true to watch the roster reveal. I watched the reveal in 2014 when the team was selected and I remember quite vividly that I wanted to be on there.

“So to hear your name called, it was a special moment.”

The US begin their campaign on Monday evening in Group B, taking on Wales at 7pm UK time. Adams knows the importance of a good start and has summarised his thoughts on the tournament as a whole.

He said: “I think our mentality going into the tournament is that you have to look at the World Cup as two completely different tournaments.

“You have the group stage which is going to take a lot of work, so you have to navigate through that in the right way.

“Then, the knock-out is… knock-out! In the US there are so many different types of knock-out tournaments and the best team doesn’t always win.

“For us, we believe in our quality, we believe in our group, we have a lot of confidence but you have to navigate that group stage in the right way.

“I think that first game is going to be an important one, a decisive one, and we know the odds are that if you win or get a crucial point in that first game then you have a good chance of going through.

“We have the mentality that the first game is very important.”
