Jesse Marsch: The mentality and fight in this team is strong

Head coach on Aston Villa draw.

Jesse Marsch discussed the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa with LUTV at Elland Road, after his side showed resilience to battle for a point with 10 players for the second half.

Going in level at the interval, the Whites were a player down shortly after the restart when Luis Sinisterra was shown a second yellow card, but came away with a valuable point.

Speaking after the match, Marsch said: “I can be really happy with the mentality of our team when we went a man down.

“I also thought tactically we were very solid when we went a man down, and didn’t give much away.

“The character and mentality of the group, I know we always have that, and the clean sheet I thought and in the end the result - whilst we’re fighting to develop what we want to be - yes I can be happy with that.

“We see a lot of teams coming here to Elland Road and slowing the games down, that’s clearly a tactic we’re going to have to deal with.

“We worked on man-down tactics over what felt like a long break, and I thought that helped us. We were a bit 4-4-1, 4-2-3, then we switched to 5-3-1.

“I thought the substitutions we made and the performances from the subs who came into the match were good.

“Then I thought we limited the opponent as much as we could, given the situation. Maybe, at the end, we could have stole one with Klichy.

“Clearly we still have work to do, but again, what you see is the mentality and fight in this team is strong.”
