Memory match: Brentford 1-1 Leeds United

A look back to February, 2020.

Leeds United face Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime. Ben Scott takes a trip down memory lane, looking at a previous clash from February, 2020.

Game 32 of the long, 46-match season saw Leeds secure a draw in their last ever visit to the famous old ground, Griffin Park.

The hosts went into the lead, but it didn’t last long and the equalising goal by Leeds’ captain would be the moment in their centenary season that many pundits say rejuvenated them.

The game ultimately ending in a low scoring draw wouldn’t be the biggest shock ever - these two had met 14 times since 2009, with five ending in draws and only 22 goals being tallied up.

The match stats saw Leeds hold the upper hand in all the notable categories and the first half highlights only underlined that.

First up, Jack Harrison pressed Brentford’s Henrik Dalsgaard and won the ball off him. He raced into the penalty area but the shot he got off was easily grasped by David Raya, Brentford’s goalkeeper.

The hosts had a chance, but from distance – Oliver Norwood failing to hit the target, his effort going wide of the post.

Brentford would have an effort moments later though, which would go inside the post they had narrowly missed moments earlier, when Said Benrahma tapped home after he didn’t clear the ball effectively.

After conceding a somewhat fortuitous lead, Leeds then really showed why they had the making of Champions and why they’d more than double the Bees’ efforts at goal on this Tuesday evening.

A trio of chances came the way of the Whites. Firstly, a Stuart Dallas cross was only tamely headed clear, allowing Pablo Hernandez a volleyed opportunity that Raya was left palming over his cross bar.

Then came Leeds’ goal, by Liam Cooper, as he reacted first to the loose ball, jabbing it in the goal after a Leeds corner created a short melee where a cluster of bodies from both sides had attempted to connect.

Just before the break Dallas crossed again, but a powerful curling header from Helder Costa just whizzed past Raya’s far post.

Leeds contained Brentford well in the second period and created another trio of good chances but all just fell short of winning the game. A Luke Ayling cross was header over by Patrick Bamford, then Raya was on hand to save a low shot from Costa.

Last up, Hernandez hit another volley from distance after a Leeds corner was not cleared but the shot was deflected out.

The draw kick started Leeds going on and winning five on the bounce before the unprecedented events happened, as Covid-19 stopped all matches. After a three-month break, the Whites began the remaining nine games with a loss before an incredible seven games in one month saw them win the league, winning six and drawing the other, scoring 21 goals and keeping five clean sheets.

The Bees of Brentford ran out of sting as they lost in the play-offs to London rivals Fulham. Leeds would end the club’s centenary season crowned as champions with 93 points, four of them gained from Brentford.
