Joel Robles signs for Leeds United

Goalkeeper joins the Whites.

Leeds United are pleased to announce the signing of experienced goalkeeper Joel Robles.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper joins on a free transfer from Spanish La Liga side Real Betis, after his contract expired at the Estadio Benito Villamarín earlier this summer.

Robles has penned a one-year deal at Elland Road, running until the summer of 2023.

A former Spanish youth international, the goalkeeper came through the ranks at Atletico Madrid and went onto make seven appearances for the club, before joining Rayo Vallecano on loan.

Following this, he linked up with then Premier League side Wigan Athletic in January 2013 in a temporary deal and made 13 appearances in all competitions, including the FA Cup final, in which Roberto Martinez’s side defeated Manchester City at Wembley.

At the end of the campaign Martinez was hired as Everton manager and he moved to sign Robles on a five-year deal at Goodison Park.

During his time on Merseyside, Robles made 65 outings in all competitions, before moving to Betis at the end of his contract in 2018.

Over the past four seasons, he played a total of 78 matches for Betis and now returns to England for a third spell.

Robles becomes the club’s eighth signing of the transfer window and will provide further competition to fellow goalkeepers Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson.
