  • Mural to celebrate 50th anniversary of the 72 FA Cup winning team

Leeds United Supporters’ Trust can today proudly announce they have commissioned their 10th  LUFC mural with support of Leeds United and the clubs official energy drinks partner Boost Drinks.

The mural will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1972 winning FA Cup team featuring squad members around a centre piece of legendary manager - Don Revie. The site is just a stone’s throw away from the recently installed commemorative plaques inside the East Stand entrance.

In an exciting and exclusive collaboration, Leeds artist Nicolas Dixon will undertake the hand painted mural with his famous abstract design and using original individual player portraits designed by acclaimed sports artist Paul Trevillion.

The mural is a tribute to the 72’ team and will feature David Harvey, Paul Reaney, Paul Madeley, Billy Bremner, Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Terry Cooper, Peter Lorimer, Allan Clarke, Mick Jones, Johnny Giles, Eddie Gray, Mick Bates, Les Cocker and Don Revie.

The 43-metre squared mural will be painted on the wall opposite the Centenary Pavilion, close to the ‘Champions’ mural by Adam Duffield and Mateusz Klich.  The 72’ mural was originally due to feature in Leeds City Centre, but planning fell through at the final hour and Leeds United stepped in to help the Trust find a suitable space. The club came up with a prime location outside the ground – which is deserving for this group of players.

The Trust have been working with the club’s official energy drinks supplier Boost Drinks, following an approach to support a mural, to find a suitable location to execute the mural. The drinks brand have kindly put forward the sponsorship money to pay for all materials, equipment, and the artist’s time.

The mural continues to be part of an ongoing project by LUST to celebrate the rich history of Leeds United across the city through different types of themed art.

Nicolas Dixon, artist said “To be painting at Elland Road, literally at the entrance where I used to queue for overnight tickets as a kid in the 80’s is very special for me. To be collaborating with such a legend as Paul Trevillion to celebrate the great Don Revie’s 72 side is quite honestly a dream come true for me.”

Paul ‘The Beaver’ Trevillion, sports artist said “I’m doubly proud and excited that soon a mural honouring the 50th Anniversary of Leeds United 1972 FA Cup victory will be on the hallowed walls of Elland Road. The mural will be larger than life – it is a magnificent artistic collaboration of Trevillion portraits and Nicolas Dixon abstract – a big thanks to Leeds United, Boost and LUST for making this happen.”

Adrian Hipkiss, Marketing & International Business Director at Boost Drinks said “It’s fantastic to be involved in such a worthy project. As a Leeds born and based company it is a great honour for Boost to be involved in marking the 50th Anniversary of Leeds United 1972 FA Cup victory and the mural is such a special way to mark the occasion.

“Leeds United is a huge club with a passionate fanbase, and it’s incredible to be able to celebrate with the loyal supporters with this mural.”

The mural is the tenth one to be commissioned by LUST following on from the 1992 midfield mural on Lowfields Road and was the first LUFC mural to appear back in 2017. Since then, the Trust have added another nine stunning tributes around the city. An interactive website has since been created with all the locations of the murals and its own route map www.murals.lufctrust.com. Many fans have already taken the tour and local groups have even done charity walks and cycle tours to raise funds.

James Mooney, Head of Communications, Leeds United Said “We are delighted to offer space at Elland Road to our Supporters’ Trust for this important and powerful artwork commemorating 50 years since our 1972 FA Cup winning team. As soon as we knew that a home for the work was needed, our Head of facilities – Mark Broadley acted quickly to find a prime location. Murals have become an important part of the club’s identity and the location at our ground will give all  supporters the opportunity to enjoy the artwork. We’d like to thank Boost Drinks and the Trust and all involved in this plan for their continued support.”

Clair Hufton, Board Member at the Leeds United Supporters’ Trust said “This has probably been the most challenging mural to date, it’s taken over a year to plan after a number of location challenges. We are over the moon that Leeds United have stepped in to give us the prime space at the ground to bring this mural to life – I don’t think there is a better and more deserving location for it. A big thanks to Boost Drinks who have funded the project and help make it happen. We’re already planning our 11th mural, which we’re sure will be a fans favourite. We’re really proud to work with such talented artists who deliver amazing execution and passion in these stunning pieces of art for us all to enjoy!”
