Jesse Marsch: It bodes well for what we can do in the future

Head coach on Premier League safety.

Jesse Marsch gave his thoughts to LUTV, after his Leeds United side secured a dramatic late winner away at Brentford to guarantee their Premier League safety.

With the score level at 1-1 going into stoppage time at the Brentford Community Stadium, Jack Harrison’s 94th minute strike sealed the three points which meant the Whites will play Premier League football again next season.

Reflecting on the game, the Leeds United head coach felt his side showed their true character under pressure once again, to score another late goal.

He said: “The pressure has been steady, the whole time I have been here. I have tried to stay calm and manage every moment in every game and every day.

“What I can say more than anything is that the focus on the work has been really good from our entire club and there hasn’t been unnecessary pressure injected into what we have done every day.

“The table situation brings its own pressure, but I’ve tried to manage the group in a way so we can be our best when it was going to matter the most, which was today.

“To see another injury time goal, to keep us alive, it says so much.”

Marsch has had 12 games in charge of the side, having taken over late in February. He is now looking ahead to next season, where he feels the team can continue to improve.

“It was an incredible 12 games and three months,” the head coach explained.

“I knew the task was going to be monumental but when you’re in the middle of it, you’re just trying to do the best you can to stay composed and help the group, to use experiences to benefit our purpose.

“In the end, what you saw more than anything in the last three months is the resolve, character and spirit of the team.

“We will need to always have that moving forward, whilst getting better and better football wise.

“It hasn’t always been easy, there have been some tough moments, there has been loads of very positive moments.

“I’ve tried to really stay focused on those things and reinforce the identity of who we want to be, what we want to be, and how we want to handle things.

“They’ve bought into it, they believed in it and I am very thankful they accepted me so well. I think it bodes well for what we can do in the future.”
