Manchester United scored two in each half to take the three points from Elland Road, in a match that had twists and turns throughout. Marcelo Bielsa’s side had fought back from two goals down at the break, but the visitors then secured the points late in the game.

The match began in front of an electric atmosphere inside Elland Road, for this highly anticipated and long-awaited fixture. After winning the ball early on in midfield, Mateusz Klich broke forward and clipped a delicate chip over the top of the Manchester United defence. The onrushing Jack Harrison collected the ball and shot at goal, only to see his strike go narrowly wide inside the opening few minutes.

When the visitors then pushed forward, Illan Meslier was called into action. Paul Pogba created enough space for himself to shoot low from the edge of the box, forcing the Leeds stopper into a good save.

Bielsa’s side were dealt an early blow when a clash of heads left Robin Koch needing treatment, from which the German international had to be substituted. Junior Firpo returned to action, coming in place of Koch.

With the closest effort of the opening 20 minutes or so, Adam Forshaw forced David De Gea into a fine stop. He cut in from the wing and curled right-footed at goal, seeing the ‘keeper dive to push it clear.

Another stop down the opposite end was a much-needed and an excellent one, as this time Meslier was the number one diving across his goal to keep out Cristiano Ronaldo at close range, from Pogba’s pass across the box.

With just over 10 minutes to go until half-time, the away side went ahead in the game. Luke Shaw curled in a corner with accuracy, finding Harry Maguire, who took the opportunity by powering his header into the back of the net.

In what had been an evenly contested match with chances at either end, it would be Manchester United who would get a second in the game, in the fifth minute of first half stoppage time.

A quick counter attack down the right saw Jadon Sancho chip a ball to the back post, where again a header hit the back of the net, from Fernandes this time to give his side a strong lead at the interval.

HALF TIME: Leeds United 0-2 Manchester United

The Whites went to their bench at the break, making changes in search of a way back into the match. Joe Gelhardt and Raphinha came on in place of Diego Llorente and Harrison.

The changes made an immediate impact. A couple of early sighters from Klich - who had been everywhere throughout for Leeds - meant a change of impetus in the game, despite the strikes not testing De Gea.

After Firpo had shown excellent defending to win the ball back from an attack by the visitors, he composed himself and played in Rodrigo down the wing, in a move that would see Elland Road erupt for the first time on the day.

The Spanish forward picked up the ball and continued his run down the flank, before crossing into the box. De Gea was off his line and the ball looped all the way over everyone - including the ‘keeper - nestling in the top corner to make the deficit just the one!

Seconds after the first had gone in, Leeds were then level! After Forshaw had superbly won the ball back, Dan James showed produced some lovely footwork on the wing and drilled the ball across the goal. Freshly introduced, Raphinha was waiting to fire home and make it two each, causing pandemonium in the stands.

The Reds responded themselves by going to their bench this time. Pogba and Jesse Lingard were replaced, with Anthony Elanga coming on along with Fred.

The changes once again had an impact on the game. From the next attack following the swaps, Ralf Rangnick’s side were back in front. Sancho was the provider again, he played in Fred who shot left-footed into the top corner to make it 2-3.

The other substitute, Elanga, then had a huge chance of his own to make it four. Once again it was Sancho the creator, as he found his teammate in space at the back post but Meslier saved well from the shot.

In this end to end encounter, Leeds then tested De Gea well again. More good football was on show down the wing between James and Firpo, which created a chance for Klich. The midfielder found space in the box but his left-footed shot lacked power and was saved.

Inside the final 10 minutes, Klich was once again proving dangerous. After a set-play from Raphinha was cleared to the edge of the box, the midfielder volleyed back at goal, forcing De Gea to tip over the bar at full stretch.

With the final few minutes of the match arriving, Manchester United scored a fourth and sealed the three points. Fernandes created the chance for Elanga, who struck low into the net. The whistle was blown a couple of minutes later to end the match.
