Marcelo Bielsa: They have been close to all of their opponents

Head coach looks ahead to Newcastle.

Marcelo Bielsa has spoken with the media ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture with Newcastle United at Elland Road.

The Whites go into the game after back to back wins against Burnley and West Ham United, so will be looking to stretch that run to three this weekend.

Speaking ahead of the match, as always, the Leeds United head coach gave an update on the fitness of his squad.

He said: “Adam Forshaw and Junior Firpo have muscular injuries.

“Patrick Bamford has a new injury at the bottom of his foot. He’s overcome his muscular problem, but now he has an issue at the bottom of his foot.

“Coming back are Diego Llorente, probably Tyler Roberts and Joe Gelhardt. We maintain the presence of Rodrigo, who played 30 minutes last week.

“Progressively, we’ve been resolving the situations that present themselves.”

On the game itself, Bielsa was asked about the way in which Newcastle boss Eddie Howe sets up his team, and what he expects to see from the new players brought into the opponents team.

“He’s [Eddie Howe] found a system, he’s found an habitual group of players, a starting XI which repeats itself regularly,” Bielsa stated.

“He’s evened the team out in all of the games, they have been close to all of their opponents in all the games they have played. This all talks positively about the job he is doing.

“With respect to the players they’ve brought in, their positions are very specific. A right full-back [Kieran Trippier] and a centre-forward [Chris Wood].

“Their centre-forward comes to replace the player they usually play in that position. They are both classic centre-forwards, even if they have different characteristics they both play there.

“It’s the same with their right full-back, he plays at different heights down the right hand side.

“Those two signings from my point of view, they don’t alter the way they play but the individualities enrich the squad.”
