Mark Jackson: We need to be more ruthless

U23s head coach on defeat to Toffees.

Mark Jackson gave his thoughts to LUTV after his side were defeated away from home in Premier League 2, against Everton.

Despite going into a two-goal lead in the first half, the Blues hit back and took all three points by netting twice in the final five minutes of the game.

Speaking after the match, Jackson stated that it was a disappointing result but one that the team can continue to learn from.

He said: “It’s a really disappointing game, result wise.

“The boys are down in there and a bit deflated, and rightly so. I thought we had elements of the game where we implemented our game plan well, particularly in the first half.

“We got into a great position being 2-0 up but we didn’t manage the situation well, and we’ve spoken about that this season in past games, where we need to do it better.

“We didn’t do that today and we got found wanting in the second half. I felt the effort was good, but we made some strange decisions in the second half with regards to our defending and things like that.

“We’ve conceded a goal just before half-time but that happens, and we need to know how to deal with that. We had the capabilities and the players out there in the second half to deal with that, but we didn’t.

“We need to be more ruthless when we have leads. We need to be more ruthless in attack when going forward, but also more ruthless in defence."

Next up for the Whites and an opportunity to return to winning ways, is a home match in the league against Brighton on Friday evening.

"They will want to bounce back quickly and be ready for Friday,” Jackson explained.

“We always try to look for the positives, it’s a learning curve for these young players that are learning their trade, they want to push on and get better.

“They’re a fantastic group of players, every single one of them wants to win and get better, they want to learn and that’s all I can ask for.”
