Marcelo Bielsa: It is great to have the fans back

Head coach discusses upcoming Saints clash.

Marcelo Bielsa has spoken to the media, ahead of the final away game of the Premier League campaign for his side.

Leeds travel to face Southampton on Tuesday evening (6pm) and will be looking to continue their excellent recent form, which has seen just one defeat in nine matches for the Whites.

When the two sides met earlier in the campaign, three second half goals saw Bielsa’s side run out comfortable winners. The head coach is well aware of the threat the home side will offer, with the added fact that the match will see the return of supporters at St Mary’s Stadium.

“It’s a team who is in a different position in the table with regards to the performances they have had,” Bielsa explained.

“They have a group of players who are very capable and they didn’t finish higher up in the table because they had a phase of nine or 10 games that were negative.

“The level of the team is superior to the position they find themselves in, in the table.

“England should feel privileged that they are able to partially resolve this situation with Covid and of course, it is great to have the fans back.

“Even if it is partially, it is not a situation that many countries are able to have.”

As the Whites enter the final week of the season, the head coach confirmed that two players are being rested for Tuesday's fixture in what has been a demanding but thoroughly impressive campaign.

Bielsa said: “Robin Koch has been given early leave with the potential for him to be called up or not called up to the German national team.

“The injury he has is not important and we didn’t want to take the risk of him playing and making it worse so we anticipated his holidays in the same way we did for Klich.

“It is not linked to whether he will be called up or not to the German national team. It’s just that he has a small niggle and we didn’t want to run the risk of a small niggle being aggravated into something bigger.

“[On Mateusz Klich] He’s not injured. The evaluations that I make over the campaign are for the needs of each player and in the case of Klich, the decision I made was the most favourable one for him.”
